Improving the disease awareness: how a communication campaign brings hidradenitis suppurativa to the light

2019

Background: Hidradenitis suppurativa is an inflammatory skin disease that presents a recurrence of painful and suppurating lesions in the apocrine gland-bearing regions, with a strong impact on the patients’ life quality. Despite its peculiar presentation, early forms are often underestimated by patients and this would inevitably result in late diagnosis and delayed therapy. Objectives: Improved communication around the disease could facilitate self-diagnosis and a quicker response from healthcare practitioners, especially in this moment when we dispose of effective treatment against this disease. Methods: A HS awareness campaign was conducted for 2 years with the help of a media agency and…

Importance of Social- and Health-Related Problems: Do Spaniards Give Them the Significance They Actually Deserve?

2019

Social and health problems imply an impact on society. The main objective of this study is to provide an overview of how Spanish people perceive cancer, terrorism, cardiovascular diseases, crime, AIDS, drugs, and traffic accidents, finding out whether they assess the importance of these issues in correspondence with their actual severity. The study used a full sample of 1206 Spaniards (51.6% females and 48.4% males) who responded to a computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI) survey on the significance of these social and health-related problems, assessed through a zero to ten Likert scale. The perceived severity of the problems was considered taking into account the official data of …

Concentrations, optical properties and sources of humic-like substances (HULIS) in fine particulate matter in Xi'an, Northwest China

2021

Humic-like substances (HULIS) are ubiquitous in the atmospheric environment, which affects both human health and climate. We present here the mass concentration and optical characteristics of HULIS isolated from aerosol samples collected in Xi'an, China. Both mass concentration and absorption coefficient (Abs365) of HULIS show clear seasonal differences, with the highest average in winter (3.91 μgC m-3 and 4.78 M m-1, respectively) and the lowest in summer (0.65 μgC m-3 and 0.55 M m-1, respectively). The sources of HULIS_C and light absorption of HULIS were analyzed by positive matrix factorization (PMF) and four major sources were resolved, including secondary formation, biomass burning, c…

Audiovisual Verification in the evolution of television newsrooms: Al Jazeera and the transition from satellite to the cloud

2021

With the spread of the digital sphere and the proliferation of images from indirect sources that can be accessed by systems and users, verification routines have become essential to ensure media corporations' credibility. The advances in artificial intelligence which allow automated fact-checking (AFC) initiatives to be created help detect falsehoods, but they do not eliminate the need for human intervention. On the contrary, information professionals are necessary, and their functions increasingly include procedures such as mediating in videos and images. This study analyses the evolution of verification routines in audiovisual journalism and how new techniques have influenced the percepti…

Top-quark mass measurements at the LHC: alternative methods

2016

Alternative top quark mass determinations can provide inputs to the world average with orthogonal systematic uncertainties and may help to refine the interpretation of the standard method. Among a number of recent results I focus on the extractions by ATLAS and CMS of the top quark pole mass from the top quark pair and tt + 1 jet production cross-section, which have now reached a precision of 1%. Amerykański Światowid. Cztery oblicza kompleksu militarno-przemysłowo-medialnego

2017

Svetovid is a Slavic four-headed god, which could be a metaphor of American militaryindustrial-media complex. Aim of this article is to analyze four main dimensions of mentioned above complex. First, probably the most obvious face of the complex are military interventions abroad, especially after World War II in the Greater Middle East. Second face is a wasteful character of the military spending, inefficiency of the military and corporate bureaucracies. Third element is presence of the militarism in the society, especially in American schools, which becomes vehicles for the army recruitment process. Last face of the military-industrial-media complex is a cultural one, epitomized by the fil…

Evolutionary paths of binaries with a neutron star - I. The case of SAX J1808.4 - 3658

2018

The evolutionary status of the low mass X-ray binary SAX J1808.4-3658 is simulated by following the binary evolution of its possible progenitor system through mass transfer, starting at a period of $\sim$6.6 hr. The evolution includes angular momentum losses via magnetic braking and gravitational radiation. It also takes into account the effects of illumination of the donor by both the X-ray emission and the spin down luminosity of the pulsar. The system goes through stages of mass transfer and stages during which it is detached, where only the rotationally powered pulsar irradiates the donor. We show that the pulsar irradiation is a necessary ingredient to reach SAX J1808.4-3658 orbital pe…

Kinetic and Mechanistic Aspects of a Poly(o-Toluidine)-Modified Gold Electrode. 2. Alternating Current Electrogravimetry Study in H2SO4 Solutions

2012

International audience; Electrodeposited poly(o-toluidine) (POT) on gold electrodes was investigated in 0.5 M H2SO4 aqueous solutions using alternating current electrogravimetry (simultaneous electrochemical impedance and mass transfer functions). The kinetic aspects of the three different redox transitions proposed for this polymer (leucoemeraldine-polaron transition, polaron-bipolaron transition, and bipolaron-pernigraniline transition) and the species involved, cation (hydrated proton), anion (bisulfate ion), and free solvent (water), are studied by means of the mass impedance technique. An ionic transfer model is proposed with coherent results where anion transfer is the fastest process…

Calculation of the pH and the titratable acidity in clinically used infusion solutions.

2006

Clinically used infusion solutions are complex aqueous mixtures composed of a variety of different salts, acids, and non-electrolytes, and are characterized by composition, initial pH, and titratable acidity (TA). By rigorous treatment as a multi-composed acid-base system, pH and TA were calculated from proton dissociation equilibria, mass balance equations and electroneutrality condition. Nine were arbitrarily chosen as model solutions in which pH and TA were experimentally determined. From composition, and based on a set of apparent acidity constants (pK values) at 37 degrees C and total ionic strength 0.155 mol/l, pH was calculated by iteration. In the model solutions, measured pH was in…

Reactor model for fast reactions in the micro-bubble column and validation

2007

A simple reactor model for predicting conversions in a micro-bubble column is described. It assumes fast reactions so that the gaseous component is readily consumed at the gas-liquid interface. Then, gas-liquid mass transfer becomes determining. As input parameters for the model, the hydrodynamics, specific interfacial area, and mass transport need to be described. Two fast model reactions, the catalytic oxidation of butyraldehyde and the absorption of CO2 in aqueous NaOH, show the applicability of the model but also its limits. The model was used for predicting reaction performance in dependence of operating conditions, in particular to get maximum conversion with the antagonistic paramete…
